Many people forget that there are areas beyond the Cote d'Or when we talk about the wines of Burgundy. Maconnais is one such region, located west of the Saone River. The region covers 6,991 (!) ha and is well known for its whites made from Chardonnay, having similar geology to that of the Cote d'Or. The appellations of Pouilly-Fuisse and Saint-Veran are particularly noteworthy.

While no Premier Cru or Grand Cru for political reasons, there are some very outstanding producers indeed. Some names worth looking out for include Olivier Merlin, Thenevet, Jules Desjourneys and there are even the likes of Leflaive, Lafon from the Cote d'Or moving to the region as land become more and more unaffordable in the Cote d'Or.
