Clos Vougeot

Often quoted as Clos Vougeot as well, the grand cru accounts for over 80% of the land in the commune. The 50.59 ha grand cru is the largest in Côte de Nuits. It extends all the way from the Route des Grand Vins to the route RN74. There are more than 80 owners with their plots of vines in Clos de Vougeot, many of them selling off the grapes to négociants.

On the top of Clos de Vougeot, it is adjacent to Musigny, Grands-Echézeaux and Echézeaux, separated only by the clos (the wall). Here you can find 2 lieux-dits that are often regarded as the best due to better drainage: Le Grand Maupertius and Le Musigni. However the lower part is on the same elevation with plots categorized as premier cru or village in other commune. Wine critics argue if the lower part can produce true grand cru quality.

Clos de Vougeot can vary a lot in quality and it is important to know the growers and where their vines are located. Anne Gros has her vines in the great Grand Maupertius and often produce excellent result. Méo-Camuzet also has most of his vines on the upper part and makes top tier Clos de Vougeot. Other fine examples of Clos de Vougeot include Leroy, Hudelot-Noëllat, Michel Gros, Jean Grivot, Joseph Drouhin, Vougeraie and François Lamarche. Bottles from the late René Engel are difficult to find, but they are very fine and make sure you handle them with care if you own some.
