At the south of Beaune, the commune of Pommard is famous for producing full, sturdy, tannic and four-square reds. There are 28 premier crus in the commune, and there are two major climats that stand out. Some would argue Les Epenots and Les Rugiens deserve a consideration for promotion to Grand Cru status.

Usually labeled as Les Epenots, the climat can actually be further divided into Les Petits Epenots, Les Grands Epenots. In the middle of the climat lies Comte Armand’s monopole Clos des Epeneaux, which is amongst the most famous wines in Côte de Beaune, if not in Burgundy.

At the south of the commune, Les Rugiens, especially Les Rugiens-Bas at the lower slope. The wines here are sturdy, rich, filled with energy and intensity. Jean-Marc Boillot, Domaine de Courcel and Hurbert de Montille are reliable sources.
