Corton

Corton / Corton-Charlemagne is the biggest Grand Cru in Côte d’Or with 160.19 ha. Together with Musigny, these are the only Grand Crus that can produce both reds and whites. It spans across the commune of Aloxe-Corton, Ladoix and Pernand-Vergelesses.

The area facing the southwest on the hill mostly belongs to Corton-Charlemagne and Chardonnays are planted on the upper slope. Meanwhile, Pinot Noirs are usually planted on the east-facing slope and can be found on lower slope as well. For the reds, there are numerous lieux-dits in the Grand Cru and the labeling can be quite confusing.

Bonneau du Martray is a reliable producer of Corton-Charlemagne, with majority of the holdings on the Pernand-Vergelesses side that usually preserve the acidity to give fresh, crispy whites that can keep longer. Bouchard Père et Fils, Joseph Drouhin, Louis Jadot, Faiveley, Albert Bichot and Louis Latour are also producing good efforts. Of course, the crown jewel here is the tiny production by Coche-Dury which is rare but very good. Famous producers like Leroy and Roumier also have holding here and their bottles are also difficult to be found.

The reds from Corton are wines that need time to round off, and quality can differ a lot across different lieux-dits. Le Clos du Roi, Les Renardes and Les Chaumes are usually considered to be real Grand Cru status. Of course the factor of winemakers is also important here. Meo-Camuzet, Comte Senard, Faiveley, Louis Jadot, Bonneau du Martray, Vougeraie and Bouchard Père et Fils are reliable sources.
