Beaune

Beaune is the heart of Côte d’Or and the old city is the place where the annual auction of Hospices de Beaune being carried out in Hôtel Dieu. The vineyards of Beaune are located on the western side of the city. There are 44 climats entitled to Premier Cru status here and the wines from Beaune can be either red or white.

Unlike other communes, there is no agreement on which individual climat is the best in Beaune. At the northern side with steeper slope, Les Bressandes stands out and yield wines that are full, firm and requires time to mature. In the middle part of Beaune, Les Teurons and Les Grèves represent the finest and complete example of Beaune Premier Crus. It is worth note that Bouchard Père et Fils’ famous “Vigne-de-l’Enfant-Jésus” comes from Les Grèves.

At the southern side next to Pommard, some may expect there is a similarity but in fact the wines there are usually softer and more approachable than the rest of Beaune. Louis Jadot’s “Clos des Ursules” from Les Vignes Franches and Joseph Drouhin’s Clos des Mouches are fine examples.
